York Festival of Ideas 2019

Over the summer we showcased the Lego robots to the general public at the York festival of ideas. we had several stations in the show-tent where different aspects of chemistry were shown where children and their parents could get hands on experience doing chemical reactions before seeing the same chemistry completed using the Lego robots.

A short video showing the capability of the Lego serial dilutor robot.

There was a Lego Technic bucket wheel excavator digging its way through a bowl of dried chickpeas.

A station which allowed the pH of acidic and basic solutions to be found using home made indicator from red cabbage. This could either turn red under acidic conditions or yellow under alkaline conditions.

The Lego robotics then showcased how reactions can be automated to test the pH of solutions using two syringe pumps and a carousel containing 10 reaction vials.

A dilutor robot then showed how we can perform serial dilutions of samples that we prepare and analyse using UV-Visible spectrophotometry.
