Outreach Activities
- We have recently published an article in the Journal of Chemical Education regarding training graduates in important techniques to perform air sensitive chemistries safely.
- We have written popular science articles for Chemistry Review, on transition metals and carbon monoxide releasing molecules.
- We have been keen to interact and collaborate more closely with schools. For example, with Lynam (York) and Willans (Leeds) we have developed lecture demonstration classes on “Chemistry at Christmas” and “Solids, Liquids and Gases”. Both lectures have been delivered annually to high schools classed (pupils aged 14-15) and primary school classes (pupils aged 7-8). A highlight was the delivery of several Christmas Lectures at Wetherby High School (see above).
- Prof. Ian Fairlamb has previously delivered activities through the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY), in addition to training school teachers in drug discovery at the national STEM learning Centre.
- We have also had the opportunity to develop Lego Mindstorms Robotics to enable simple chemical transformations to be performed. As new technologies are introduced into laboratories every year, these Lego robots help us to keep the public informed of new developments, in a fun and informative way, which could introduce a new cohort of chemists into a new era of chemistry.
